CASH DRAWERS

CASH DRAWERS:
A cash drawer is a storage device to hold coins and cash bills when a transaction has taken place at the Point of Sale. Cash drawers are usually connected to the base of a cash register or point of sale equipment. The drawer is divided into separate compartments for notes and coins for ease of use. Most cash drawers have plastic compartments for coins and notes of like denominations, which allow a cashier to quickly locate and dispense change back to the customer. Cash drawers are made of rugged steel, employ durable drawer sliding tracks, and come with the high quality rock. Typically, each cash drawer is shipped with two keys on a ring.
A cash drawer is a simple device that slides in and out of a lockable box for safety and speed. It is usually of strong construction and may be integrated into the body of a cash register or housed as a separate unit. It slides in and out of its lockable box and is secured by a spring-loaded catch. When the transaction is completed, the register sends an electrical impulse to a solenoid to release the catch and open the drawer.
Nearly all cash drawers have a manual release catch underneath to open the drawer in the event of a power failure.
The cash drawer is a necessary component in any POS System. Most cash drawers are printer driven. Each receipt printer manufacturer has a unique cash drawer interface, making each cash drawer printer-specific. Cash drawers with interchangeable connector cables allow a single cash drawer to support any receipt printer provided the correct connector cable is used. Cash drawers may also be attached independently via serial or parallel port.
Normally, the Cash Drawer is connected to a Receipt Printer with RJ-11 connector or directly attached to the POS terminal's Serial (COM Port). Most of existing POS software has pre-programmed with command to link with the cash drawer and kick the drawer out.

BARCODE LABEL PRINTERS

Barcode Label Printer:
A barcode printer is a computer device that is used for printing barcode labels or tags. Once a barcode label is printed, it can be affixed to physical objects, such as retail or shipping products. When browsing through a retail store, everything that you see will have a barcode. This set of numbers is used to identify the product, along with it’s price. A cashier will generally scan the barcode, which automatically rings up the price of the item and allows them to quickly move on to the next item.

Barcode printers are a convenient office tool for any business needing barcode labels. Direct thermal printers, which is one of the technologies used among the barcode printing industry, require special thermal paper for printing. The thermal printing process begins when a print head generates heat and causes a reaction in the thermal paper. From this reaction, the paper turns black in special areas to create a barcode.

A barcode label printer works under the same principle of an ink-jet printer. The barcode label printer receives the data from the computer program, it orders the print head to print the bar code on the label.A barcode label printer is, basically, an ink-jet printer that has been built for that specific purpose.

www.realtime7.com
Different Technologies:
A number of different print technologies are available to print barcodes.

There are two main categories:
Impact and non-impact printing techniques.
Impact printing includes dot matrix and drum (or formed character) printers.
Non-impact printing includes thermal direct, thermal transfer, electrostatic (laser printers), laser etching and ink jet printers.

There are four basic types of barcode printers:
Dot Matrix, Inkjet, Laser, and Thermal.
Barcodes can be printed on documents, or more frequently, adhesive labels, tags or other media, even ID bracelets.

Dot Matrix Printer:
Dot matrix print technology is a longstanding method of producing barcodes on-site. The barcode image is produced by hundreds of dots printed in a matrix to make the series of lines and spaces commonly referred to as a barcode.
Advantages:
Printers are easily accessible and a less expensive option of printing
Various surfaces can be used to print on
Multi-pass ribbons can reduce costs for ribbons and label materials

Ink Jet Printer:
Ink Jet printing is usually used in high production settings where production of barcodes and human readable fonts need to be reproduced at high rates of speed.
Advantages:
Direct ink jet printing requires only one step to finish the carton or readable material, where other forms may require adhesion of a label to the finished product.

Laser Printers:
A laser printer works much like a photocopier. Charging particles of the paper that then attract ions from the ink. These two particles are then bonded together by the heat and pressure of the drum.
Advantages:
Print high-quality text and graphics on paper documents and can double as a document printer when not being used to print barcodes.
Density and resolution are relatively high, allowing the production of scanable barcodes at any wavelength when read with an infrared scanner.

Thermal Printers:
Thermal printing includes Direct Thermal and Thermal Transfer

Direct thermal printing is an older technology designed for use with copier and fax machines that utilizes chemically coated paper. The direct thermal printhead consists of a long, linear array of tiny resistive heating elements that are arranged perpendicular to the flow of the paper. Each printhead element locally heats an area directly below it on the paper. The image is produced by rows of dots caused by chemical reactions that are formed as the media passes beneath the active edge of the printhead.
Advantages:
Produces sharp print quality with great scanability
Ideal for applications with a short-shelf life such as shipping labels and receipts
Simple to operate and inexpensive to maintain – no ink, toner or ribbon to monitor or replace.
Batch or single label printing is available with minimal waste.

Thermal Transfer use the same basic technology as direct thermal printers, but replace chemically coated paper with a non-sensitized face stock and a special, inked ribbon. A durable, polyester ribbon film coated with dry thermal transfer ink is placed between the thermal printhead and label.
The thermal printhead transfers the ink onto the label surface, where it cools and anchors to the media surface. The polyester ribbon is then peeled away, leaving behind a stable, passive image.
Advantages:
Produces long life scanability
Produce batch or single print labels with minimum waste
Long-term maintenance is low compared to dot-matrix, inkjet, and laser
Print on a high variety of media stock High durability

RECEIPT PRINTERS

Receipt Printers:
The receipt printer is a device just like any other printer. Receipt printers, when connected to a computer via a cable interface, receive data from the point of sale software application running on the computer. The data is interpreted through the printer’s device driver and subsequently printed.

Providing accurate, readable receipts with each transaction improves the quality and consistency of operations and helps prevent misunderstandings that require costly customer service.
A receipt printer plays an integral role in any POS system, signaling the cash drawer to open when the transaction is completed. There are one or two cash drawer ports on the back of your receipt printer for direct attachment. The receipt printer and Cash Drawers will share a single port on your PC.

Receipt Cutting:Most receipt printers are available with options for either a manual tear bar or an auto cutter for delivering the paper receipt. This is purely a personal preference.

Types of Receipt Printers:
The type of receipt printer you need is based on the type of store you have and what functionality you want. Receipt printers can be Impact or Thermal.

Thermal printers:
Thermal technology uses heat to register an impression on the receipt. These printers do not use ribbons and are generally faster printers. The receipt will fade over time over time or in sunlight. These printers are the most popular for retail applications.
Thermal printers are fast and quiet. Typically stores that don’t want the noise associated with an impact printer can go for these printers.

TSP600 Series:
The TSP600 is high speed, low cost direct thermal printer offers many of the features found in more expensive printers. Full graphics and barcode printing support is standard. Two-color thermal printing support is also included.
The TSP600 also features recessed cable connections to keep dirt and debris away from the sensitive connection ports. These recessed connections also greatly reduce the risk of cables being tampered with or accidentally unplugged.
It supports the applications of POS like Customer Receipt & End of the Day Report.

Impact Printers:
Impact printers are the most flexible and economical of all receipt printers. They use ink ribbons to imprint the receipt paper like a standard dot matrix printer. They can print 2-ply receipts (one copy is retained by the vendor, the other by the customer). Most impact printers have the option to print up to two colors — the standard colors are black and red.

Epson's TM-U220:
Impact printers are compact, reliable and optimized for high-speed throughput. They offer all the easy-to-use features important to the retail. In addition, the TM-U220 printers have been designed to be 100% compatible with existing systems that currently use a TM-U200 printer. The TM-U220 series also features drop in paper loading. The U220A has an auto cutter, journal take up and offers two-color printing black & red.

Star SP200:
The SP200 Series are high-speed receipt printers with built-in Verifone 200 emulation which are ideal for credit authorization terminals (CAT), data logging systems, and point-of-sale environments. SCANNERS

BARCODE SCANNERS:
A Barcode Scanner or Barcode reader is a computer peripheral for reading barcodes printed on various surfaces.
It is an electronic device to read barcodes that electro-optically converts bars and spaces into electrical signals and decodes the pattern into the original encoded data.It can be attached to Point of Sale systems for sales recording.

Like a flatbed scanner, it generally consists of a light source, a lens and a photo conductor translating optical impulses into electrical ones. Additionally, nearly all barcode readers currently produced contain decoder circuitry analyzing the barcode's image data provided by the photo conductor and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port.

Once it is run across the scanner, the scanner picks up the barcode. This is done by it reading the bars and spaces between the bars. There are many barcode formats that encode bars and spaces in different ways. Some can even have 2-d pictures and graphics. Two of the most common barcode formats are UPC and Code 3 of 9.

How does a barcode work to help a company? Barcode labels are attached to all the product in the stores. They help to uniquely identify the items and the scanner is very fast at reading and decoding these barcode labels. For companies having many inventory items, the barcode product identifiers can be quite long and a human agent will take a longer time to key in each product identifier. As well the human agent is likely to make a lot of mistakes when entering the values into the point of sale or store inventory system. As a result, bar-coding can help to speed up processing time at the checkout and as well reduce human data entry errors. This is one of it’s primary benefits.

A bar code scanner with keyboard wedge output plugs directly into the keyboard port on your computer and also provides a pigtail connector to plug in your keyboard simultaneously. When a bar code is scanned with the keyboard wedge bar code reader, the bar code data goes into the computer as if it were typed in on the keyboard by the user. This is called keyboard emulation. Newer barcode scanners can have USB connectors that do the same.

BARCODE FORMATS:

UPC:
Stands for Universal Product Code, which was the first system of bar code labeling to be widely adopted for product marking.

UPC-A bar codes are the most common type of UPC barcodes and have ten digits plus two overhead digits. The first character indicates the product type, the next five digits represent the manufacturer and the next five digits represent the product. The final digit is a checksum digit.
UPC-E is the second most common type of UPC barcode and is used for products where the size of the package cannot accommodate a standard UPC-A barcode format. UPC-E barcodes are encrypted versions of the UPC-A formatUPC A and E Barcodes can represent only numerical data (numbers 0 through 9) - no text characters are allowed.
EAN European Article Numbering symbols are fixed in length (either 8 (EAN-8) or 13 (EAN-13)) and can only contains the digits 0-9. In the EAN system, the first two or three digits are normally used to identify the country of the EAN International Organization issuing the number
Code 2 of 5 can represent the digits 0-9. It is a popular choice for airline tickets, photo developing envelopes and internal warehouse systems.

Code 128 system uses 4 different bar and space widths to achieve a relatively compact barcode. There is no restriction to the number of characters that can be encoded in the 128 systems, although the width of the barcode must remain within the scanning width of the actual barcode scanner.

Code 3of 9:
is an alphanumeric barcode. It is also known as the Code39. It is commonly used for various bar-coding labels, such as name badges, inventory and industrial applications. The Code 39 barcode is the easiest of the alphanumeric barcodes to use and is designed for character self-checking thus eliminating the need for check character calculations.
The symbology of the Code 39 character set consists of barcode symbols representing characters 0-9, A-Z, the space character and symbols: , . , $, /, +, %

As the scanner picks up the bars of the barcode, it then transfers the information to a computer (or register). The computer then finds the record associated with that barcode in the store inventory or POS system. The computer records may contain such information as price, number of items available etc.

Laser Bar Code Scanners:
This is the most popular bar code scanner. A laser bar code scanner need not be close to or touch the bar code to do its job. A standard range laser bar code scanner can read a bar code from about 6 to 24 inches away, and a long range scanner can read bar code from about 2 to 8 feet away.
An extra long-range scanner can read a bar code 30 feet away.

Laser barcode scanners vary in price from $200 to $2,000 and come in a variety of models. The Symbol LS 2208 is an excellent Laser Barcode Scanner for any application.

MS6220 Pulsar is a trigger less, entry-level hand-held laser barcode scanner. Pulsar combines the high-speed and accuracy of a laser scanner with the working range and price of a typical CCD barcode scanner. Its one model that satisfies all applications. By using a laser, the width of the scan-line grows as the bar code moves further away from the scanner face giving Pulsar the ability to read the wide codes that similar sized CCD barcode scanners are incapable of reading. The high visibility 650 nm laser helps the operator line-up the bar code, thus making scanning bar codes easier in all lighting conditions. The Pulsar is easy to set up and configure, making it an ideal entry-level product.

CCD Barcode Scanners & Readers:
A CCD barcode reader is point and shoot!
CCD scanners are available with both USB and keyboard wedge connections. USB scanners will work on any computer with a USB port. Typically no drivers or software installation is required. Keyboard wedge scanners connect in between your keyboard and your computer. No software installation is required. Most wedge scanners are for IBM PCs only but there are some Mac keyboard wedge scanners available. As keyboard wedge scanners plug into the keyboard port of your computer, they may not work with some laptops.
Scanning is simple. Just aim the scanner at the bar code and press the button. The scanner provides both audible and visual indicators of a successful scan.

This is my favorite type of bar code reader. There is no physical contact between the book and the bar code reader so there is no danger of damaging or scoring the cover. They are accurate and reliable.
Compared to laser scanners, CCD barcode scanners are extremely durable and require less maintenance. CCD scanners consume little power and work under most lighting conditions. The CCD barcode scanners have built-in decoders and can auto-discriminate several bar code symbologies. They receive their power from the USB port or PC keyboard so no external power supply is required.
